While we are all stuck at home for the next month cleaning our homes, why not join me to do a traditional inner cleanse and detoxify the body of accumulated fat and toxins.
Ayurvedic Medicine recommends doing an inner cleanse at the beginning of each season to ensure a strong immune system and reduction of stress.
A home cleanse does not have to be complicated, in fact most likely you will feel more energetic, less anxious and less depressed once we get that accumulated gunk out of the tissues, colon, and blood. While I prefer to work with people individually to address individual needs I want to share the following tools with you below. These are general guidelines that work well for most everyone.
A cleanse consists of three things: Diet and behavior surrounding the intake of food, Herbal Formulas that cleanse the colon, liver, and blood, and Meditation to balance the mind and emotions.
So let’s address the diet: I recommend doing the cleanse for at least 7 days but you can do it for 14 or 21 days as well. The longer the deeper the cleanse. If you are underweight, then I recommend not doing it for more than 3 days and if you have a health condition, please ask your M.D. if you can do this cleanse. If you are trying to lose weight (like me), then the longer period of time is best.
1). Each day include something called Kichari – it’s a mildly spiced mung bean soup or vegetable barley soup if you can’t digest mung beans or can’t access them. You can eat this for lunch and/or dinner. Please email me for the recipes. Consume vegetables (not raw ,but cooked in a small amount of ghee (clarified butter or sunflower oil) along with turmeric, cumin, coriander, and fennel. In the morning breakfast can be a stewed apple with clove or stewed prunes to cleanse the stomach and help with a bowel movement.
Avoid the following foods that block the channels and are difficult to digest: Peanut Butter, The Night Shades which include: Tomato, White Potato, Eggplant, and Bell Peppers – these cause inflammation and sore joints as well. However, sweet potatoes and yams are fine. If you insist on eating meat during a cleanse, which I don’t recommend meat of any kind during a cleanse then stick to a chicken broth with lots of vegetables. Avoid cold drinks and food right out of the refrigerator as the cold foods interfere with digestion as well. Avoid canned foods, hard cheese, ice cream, and deep- fried foods such as fries or eggrolls. Avoid refined sugar such as candy and cakes. If you have a sweet tooth try dates , figs, and fresh sweet juicy fruit such as pineapple, mango, or pears.
2) Sip plain hot water in between meals to further cleanse, it’s like an inner shower. Do not add anything to it. Tea is separate from this ritual. A cup of hot water should be sipped first thing in the morning before breakfast to help with bowel movements.
3) Avoid snacking and eating in between meals. Wait for 3 to 6 hours in between each meal.
4) Dinner should be eaten before 7:00 pm and consist of Barley Vegetable Soup or Kichari or a sweet potato.
5) Recommended herbs: To cleanse the Colon: Triphala, can be taken after each meal or 2 tablets one to two hour before bedtime. For the Liver, Blood, and Skin: Amla Berry. Two tablets twice a day. www.mapi.com/BonitaCarol I have been recommending these products for over 30 years and thousands of customers simply feel great from taking them. I also love the product Prakrit Tablets from www.chandika.com instead of Triphala. Prakrit is a deeper cleanse.
6) Exercise: Light yoga, dance, or walking each day.
7). Go to bed by 10:00 and wake up a 6:00 am. Do not over sleep and avoid daytime sleep. Feed your mind positive things and avoid over watching news or spending too much time online. Your mind also needs a cleanse. Perhaps now is the time to be creative, plant a garden, or learn new recipes.
7) Meditate twice a day. Despite the chaos in the world, I’ve been able to maintain a deep sense of calm and peace. I know that many of you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed. As a result, I’ve been feeling called to share the tools that have created this inner calm, so you, too, can live in the eye of the storm during these times of panic. As many of you know I have been practicing Transcendental Meditation since 1976 and I still derive benefits from it. I was a former TM teacher and witnessed hundreds of people reduce anxiety and PTSD symptom. You can learn TM online at www.TM.org. However, if this is something that does not interest you, you are invited to learn a psycho-physiological meditation that I offer in my private counseling and Ayurveda practice please contact me so we can talk more about it 847 636 2744.
However, please contact me if you want a more advanced and detailed cleanse for your individual needs at a reduced cost of $65 instead of $125 for the month of April. This does not include supplements but includes specific spices and herbal teas, behavorial recommendations specific to your needs and detox vegetable recommendations.:
And lastly, I wanted to let you know of some good news. I will be offering an Ayurveda Health Certificate Program at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago starting the weekend of June 6th. It’s a 10- month program and I very excited to be sharing my knowledge of Ayurvedic Health Care with the community.
Blessings,
