What Your Poo Says About Your Health

What Our Poo Tells Us About Our Health According to Ayurveda

Thousands of years ago, Ayurvedic Medicine used a detailed description of stool as a diagnostic tool to determine one’s health.  As an Ayurvedic Health Practitioner we are trained to understand what are called Malas or waste products. Waste products has its own criteria indicating what’s happening in our health.    So, here’s a little information to help determine what the ideal poop looks like if you are in good health and what to aim for and another description if your digestion is not working so efficiently.  As an Ayurvedic practitioner, conversation about one’s poo is pretty routine, it tells me a lot about what’s happening about one’s digestion power and health.

What a healthy stool should be like:

·  One complete elimination in the morning on a daily basis, no skipped bowel movements

·  A brown color

·  One banana shape not broken, well formed

·  Does not stick to the toilet bowl

·  Easy to wipe – no mess, about 2 or 3 swipes, a clean swipe

·  Minimal odor

·  consistently the same –  regardless of what you eat

·  No gas

Less than ideal and needs attention

·  Loose stools or diarrhea

·  Constipation (even if one day)

·  Difficulty  or painful defecating

·  Hemorrhoids

·  Messy stools (difficult to clean up)

·  Incomplete bowel movement

·  Black stool (see an M.D.)

·   Greasy or shiny stool (see and M.D.)

·   Clay colored stools

·   Blood in the stool (see an M.D. if not sue to hemorrhoids)

·   Undigested food in the stool, Mucus in the stool
